Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were the “it” couple for a full decade since they first met in 2005. What seemed to be a perfect relationship had fans on the edge of their seats when the two country singers decided it was best to split up and go their separate ways.
And it didn’t seem to take very long for the tabloids and rumors to start running wild about how ska-chick Gwen Stefani and rustic chap Blake Shelton ended up together, mostly since they met while both were in love marriages.
We all know that the story ends with Lambert and Shelton finding new love with completely different people, but the journey of how they got there has been kept under the radar until now.
Keep on reading to uncover the true story of how city girl Gwen and country boy Blake got their happily ever after together.
When the Past Sang the Future
Tabloids and fans are now addicted to the contemporary romance of The Voice judges Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, but how exactly did they end up getting together if both were in loving marriages when they met? To understand the end, let’s rewind and start from the beginning.
After briefly meeting at a recent event in the past, young Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were paired up to share the stage and sing the country hit “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” together in 2005’s CMT 100 Greatest Duets.
Little did they know that this would eventually lead them to live a life together at their ranch in Oklahoma.
The First Spark of Lambert’s Love
Both Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert’s careers were up and rising when they were first asked to share the stage for CMT in 2005. The two country stars met for the first time backstage and couldn’t keep their eyes off each other during their fantastic performance together. And this was just the first part of their blazing romance that was about to come.
Everyone who watched the show had gotten a front-row seat at the beginning of their love story. But Blake Shelton had a lot more than warm, fuzzy feelings going on through his head at the time.
Shelton’s First Thoughts About Lambert
Both Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert had instantly connected as soon as they met. Everything seemed incredibly natural and comfortable, from the chemistry they had on stage while performing to the backstage banter.
However, Shelton was married to another Oklahoma native, Kaynette Williams, during this time. So, what was going through his head as he shared a romantic moment on stage with Lambert?
Years later, on a special episode on Behind the Music: Miranda Lambert, Shelton shared that he was a bit thrown off at the time. “I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody. I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody thinking ‘Man, this shouldn’t be happening.’”
Legalizing the End of a Love
Being well-known country music stars, rumors about Shelton and Lambert had a romantic relationship before his separation from Kaynette Williams started circling about.
And although some sparks were flying between him and Lambert when they first met, the two denied that anything romantic started before Shelton and Williams split up in 2006. But once everything was over, it seemed like nothing could stop them from lighting up the flame!
While Shelton was wrapped up in a whole lot of love in the early ‘00s, what was Gwen Stefani up to?
From No Doubt to Flying Solo
The early 2000s were good for Gwen Stefani. And as the lead singer of No Doubt, her music career was shining.
The well-known and loved band successfully released a greatest-hit album come 2003, which is when Stefani started working on a side project.
Her so-called side project prompted a several-year hiatus for No Doubt, but it quickly turned into a multi-platinum album. However, that wasn’t the only highlight of that period for Gwen.
Shelton’s Duet and Stefani’s Solo
The rebellious, spunky city girl flew solo and at full-speed with her new project and was anything but a Hollaback girl.
Stefani’s debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (L.A.M.B.) was finalized and released in 2004.
Fans loved everything about the album – from the ‘80s inspired electro-pop beats to the spicy and sassy lyrics to the themed concepts of wealth, love, and fashion that radiated throughout the tracklist.
And while Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were on stage singing their first duet together in 2005, Stefani set out on her first solo tour (the Harajuku Lovers Tour).
Love, Music, and a Baby
There was just one more heavenly surprise cooking up in Stefani’s life.
Her life was filled with music, from her career with No Doubt to her solo career. And it was filled with love from her newly-expanded fan-base and her beloved husband, Gavin Rossdale – rhythm guitarist of the band Bush. So, what was missing from this luxurious life? A baby!
In 2006, Stefani and her husband expanded the family and had their first son together, Kingston Rossdale.
While Stefan’s life seemed to be falling perfectly into place, Shelton’s simultaneously appeared amid a new chapter in life.
Different Love Paths, But Similar Music Tracks
Shelton and Stefani’s paths seemed to be on completely different routes by 2006.
While Blake Shelton was in the midst of a separation from his first wife, Stefani was getting ready to expand her family with one new member.
Although their love lives seemed to be in entirely different books, their music careers were on similar success paths.
During the 2005-2006 time period, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, and Gwen Stefani reached the top charts for their albums and received platinum certifications.
Who Supported Who?
The bubble pop electric queen released her first solo album, finished up a grand tour, and given birth to a precious son within 2-3 years.
All the while, Miranda Lambert had been falling in love with Blake Shelton at a distance. Due to his marriage, the smitten musicians kept their relationship solely platonic. Both Shelton and Lambert were respectful people, and they knew to tread lightly and carefully in this area.
And just like Stefani had the support from her husband and family when her solo career was blowing up, Lambert had turned to her new friend, Blake Shelton, as she grew to become country music’s brightest young star.
Blake Shelton as a Bestie
Miranda Lambert was in her freshly ripe years of her 20s when her career started to bloom. Her new country’s life had been filled with concerts, studio time, and photoshoots. So, it was nice to have a pal that could help her through it all.
During her interview on Behind the Music: Miranda Lambert, she further explained the importance of Shelton for her at that time. “It just felt so great to have somebody that had been through it. Who knew exactly what I was going through.”
Shelton mentioned that their “relationship was an instant bond. I talked to her 3-4 times a week, probably.”
But soon enough, the roles would have to switch.
Rumors suggested that Shelton’s separation was due to Lambert, but Shelton and his wife were in a rough patch even before he met her. So, when the time came for them actually to split up, of course, Shelton was in the wrong place. And anyone who has gone through a marriage separation knows and understands the importance of support from friends and family.
And even though Lambert and Shelton did start to develop feelings for each other, they also knew it wasn’t the time or place to do so.
So, was Miranda the reason for the end of Shelton’s first marriage?
A Tough Time for Them Both
Everyone loves Blake Shelton for his music and because he’s a genuine, friendly, and respectful guy all around. And Miranda Lambert shares very similar values as Shelton when it comes down to morality and ethics. So, she did her best to keep her feelings on the back burner and be there for Shelton in any way that he needed.
“Being there for him as a friend going through a [separation], and then also being in love with him, I had to give him his space. And had to see him in a terrible spot, you know? And that was a really rough time for both of us,” explained Miranda on Behind the Music.
Just like with any celebrity battling the tabloids, dealing with the rumors about Lambert being the reason for their split was quite a handful, too.
A Dark Time
So did Miranda have anything to do with the end of Blake’s first marriage?
Miranda’s friend, Laci Chaney, shared with Behind the Music: Miranda Lambert Miranda’s side of it all.
“She dealt with a lot of guilt. But the more that they spent time together, the more that she realized that she wasn’t the reason that the marriage didn’t work out.”
So the rumors were just rumors, and as Miranda’s unnecessary guilt filtered away, Shelton’s true feelings for her came up on his radar.
Meant to Be
Love lives in its universe. Nobody knows when or how love is going to hit.
During Shelton’s interview with Behind the Music: Miranda Lambert in 2011, he affirmed, “Looking back on [the first performance together], I was falling in love with her, right there on stage.”
The two fell in love hard and fast once his separation was finalized.
Together they took on each other’s hearts, as well as country fans’, as they became the “it” couple. The two seemed wholly meant to be from collaborating and performing together on stage to hunting and staying in together at home.
But relationships are never that easy, especially when you’re a celebrity.
The High Times of the Relationship
One of the best parts about their relationship was that Shelton got to be a part of Lambert’s transition from a young woman to star.
From sharing her first experience of bowhunting to developing herself as a musician, Shelton truly cherished being with her. “To be able to experience those things with her, I loved that,” further explained Shelton on Behind the Music. And even more so, Shelton felt like he was developing as a person and musician, too, by being around her.
Inspiring Each Other to Be Better
In 2008, the two lovebirds went on their first tour together, and it was overall a great experience.
Shelton told Redbook, “I learned a lot watching her on stage every night,” while Lambert expressed, “we pushed each other to be better.”
They were smitten; they were inspired by each other, shared the same interests, and held onto the same values.
Their love was inspiring to fans all around, and it seemed like the power couple was unstoppable.
Yet as both country singers were on a successful streak, along came to an issue known all-too-well in the music industry.
The Wave That Rocked the Boat
The country singing, bowhunting, spunky celebrity couple had hit a wave that might have rocked the love boat a little too hard.
Although they had the rare and incredible experience of touring together in 2008, their schedules ultimately became a problem.
So when you’re on the road at different times or have opposite schedules between shooting music videos, participating in photoshoots, or even in the studio, it takes a toll on the relationship.
Supposedly, Lambert would sometimes have to look upon BlakeShelton.com to see where he was just to keep up with his schedule!
From Friendship to Marriage
Let’s face it; long-distance is hard. Not impossible, but hard.
Shelton and Lambert were facing much more than just distance in their way, though. Being a musician and achieving your dream is rewarding on so many levels, but that doesn’t make it easy.
Before they got married, they struggled with schedule issues and spending enough time together.
Giving up on the battle and splitting up was something that crossed their minds multiple times, yet they always seemed to find a way to overcome it. They deeply loved each other and felt that being together with incredibly demanding careers and dreams was worth it.
And in 2011, they took things to the next level and had a beautiful wedding in Texas.
From The Perfect Duet to Two Solo Acts
Ultimately, the battle that the happy country couple had to fight against while dating was trailed alongside them during their marriage. Back in their 2011 interview with Behind the Music, Lambert commented on the hardships of overcoming their time apart together and that as amazing their love story was, they “definitely were not a fairy tale.”
Lambert and Shelton spent their time together on their ranch in Oklahoma when they could, but with both of their careers blowing up, they barely got to see each other as often as they would have liked. So eventually, all of it had caught up to them, and the perfect duet had decided to transition into two solo acts.
“This is Not the Future We Envisioned”
After four years of marriage and a full decade of being in each other’s lives, the couple decided to separate.
According to ET Online, the couple’s statement mentioned that “This is not the future we envisioned, and it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately.”
The two seemed to be so in love and smitten, yet their announcement seemed to be quite genuine. As sad as it is, we give them props for being so sincere about the whole concept.
With that said, they did ask for compassion and privacy when it came down to this personal aspect of their life. Only recently has the couple opened up about their feelings about how their marriage ended.
Lambert’s Feelings on the Separation
Schedules weren’t the only thing that caused Shelton and Lambert to end their perfect country love story.
Lambert shared with E! Online that it’s not just about what you need to overcome during your marriage; it’s basically about who you and your partner are.
“[Marriage is] a tough business, and we gave it our best college try. I met him at 21—I am now almost 32. You change as people. If I’m not a different person than I was at 21, then something’s wrong with me.”
Sometimes you grow with a partner, and sometimes you don’t. Lambert’s insight with E! Online truly hit the nail on the head about why many couples might struggle with their marriage, not just hers.
Lambert’s Insight on Marriage
Miranda Lambert was so young when she met Blake Shelton and when she got famous. She got to experience so many incredible highs, both with music and with love.
And as much as Shelton loved experiencing and seeing Lambert develop as a person, sometimes that’s not enough to indeed keep things together. She thought and felt about Shelton, and marriage in her early 20s also developed and changed in her early 30s.
“I do have a completely different outlook on marriage and what it should be about… I feel like it’s not about it being a step in life. It’s not about a piece of paper or a diamond. It’s the way you feel about somebody and the commitment in your heart.”
When 10 Years Ends in 10 Days
In 2015, CNN reported that Shelton said, “Miranda and I didn’t have any kids, and we had our prenuptial agreement… Once we filed for divorce, it was over in a nine- or 10-day waiting period.”
And alas, their love story of 9-10 years seemed to be over in 9-10 days. Fans were devastated.
The two publicly claimed and reassured everyone multiple times that they ended on good terms and no bad blood between them. And being two beloved artists in the country music world meant their paths would cross again, just on a more friendly note than romantic.
During all of this heartbreak, though, another hot and spicy pot of love was brewing up.
Gwen Stefani’s Life Summary: Mid 2000s Edition
For the ten years that Lambert and Shelton were together, the a-whole-nother timeline was happening simultaneously of someone else’s love story: Gwen Stefani’s.
Stefani and her musician husband, Gavin Rossdale, got married in 2002. Following that, they welcomed three wonderful sons in 2006, 2008, and 2014, all while driving her solo career act through the sky and reuniting with her band No Doubt.
As rumors about an alleged affair with her husband were going around, the couple tried their best to keep any of their family issues private for the sake of their children.
But behind closed doors, her whole world came crashing down come 2015, and it was time for a change.
Darkest before the Dawn
Gwen Stefani is always so energized and whimsical, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what it’s like to hit rock bottom. And with her marriage falling apart, she went through a rough time before getting back up.
She opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about what she went through during her heartbreak. And she truly believed that there’s a reason why everything went down the way it did.
“All I wanted my whole life was to have babies, be married, like what my parents have… Of course, you go through the ‘Why me?’ and feel sorry for yourself. But then I was like, ‘No, this happened to me already, and I made something good out of it.”
A Job That Would Mean so Much More
Stefani is the type of artist who takes her emotions – especially heartbreak – and turns it into beautiful music. And that’s precisely what she did; she started writing her album This Is What the Truth Feels Like.
But let’s take one more step backward before we move this story forward.
Back in 2011, the same year that Shelton got married, he also joined the judging cast of the hit competitive singing show, The Voice. And little did he know that this opportunity would be much more than just a job.
Shelton and Stefani’s Endless Love
Fast forwarding the timeline back to 2014, when both Stefani and Shelton seemed to be going through some home troubles.
Stefani started working on her new solo album, joining The Voice, to co-judge with Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, and Blake Shelton.
And much like Lambert and Shelton were paired up to sing a duet, a similar adventure was destined for Shelton and Stefani.
The two hilariously battled against each other on Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync Battle in 2015, ending their battle by joining forces to duet none other than Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’s classic, sweet love song, “Endless Love.”
City Girl Gwen and Country Boy Blake
Nobody would have ever expected that Rocker girl Gwen and Country boy Blake would end up being such a good fit. But they are proof that opposites not only attract but genuinely complement each other, too!
Multiple sources, including People Magazine, have reported Stefani claimed that she “didn’t even know that he was a human being on this planet” before The Voice. But now, she can’t imagine life without him. Talk about B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
So their lives intertwined from The Voice, but what triggered their relationship to bloom?
The Heart-to-Heart That Joint Their Hearts
The two had met on season seven of The Voice but didn’t get a chance to know each other on a deeper level at the time, especially since she took the next season off to have her third son.
But by the time she returned in 2014, they were both going through hard times in life with their separations and leaned on each other during this period.
In an interview with Billboard in 2016, Shelton explained that everything started with a heart-to-heart they had. “She said, ‘I’m going through something very similar to what you’re going through. I understand. And I hate it.’ That’s kind of how our friendship and bond started, that day,” Shelton shared.
“Gwen Saved My Life”
The heart-to-heart that Shelton and Stefani shared was just a planted seed that would soon form into a beautiful tree.
Shelton also mentioned to Billboard that after that conversation, they started checking in on each other weekly. “Gwen saved my life. Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile [break-up] from another musician? You can’t even imagine the similarities in our [break-ups].” He further explained, “Next thing I know, I wake up, and she’s all I care about, and I’m ¬wondering if she feels the same about me.”
How did Gwen take it all?
“One of the Greatest Gifts”
Recently Gwen opened up to E-News! about what her life’s been like since the separation. “I feel as if I spent the last four years healing… You know, trying to build my life again. Having a best friend like Blake to help me do that has been one of the greatest gifts.”
And you know what? Misery might love company, but love comes when you least expect it. And Shelton and Stefani’s 2016 hit song they wrote together (“Go Ahead and Break My Heart”) summed up their feelings quite perfectly:
“You know I’m broken, I don’t trust anyone…You’ve got me dreaming, got me thinking, I’ve got some hope. There is nobody else I wanna get to know.”
The Glam-Country Couple
So now that we know that the new glam-country couple connected over broken hearts, what is their relationship like now that they’re all put-together and healthy?
Well, for one, the two are completely head over heels for each other.
In her 2019 interview with The Today Show, Gwen addressed the issue and said that she is “obsessed with Blake Shelton” and still is “so fascinated that he was alive” before they ever met!
They’re both judges again on The Voice this year and even produced music together. The camera they enjoy spending time on his Oklahoma ranch together with his watermelon plants and wildflowers.
There’s one more critical aspect to their new life together, though.
Happily Ever After
When she was married to Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert wasn’t ready to have children. All the while, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale had three boys together before their split.
Clearly, Stefani’s kids are incredibly important to her and a big part of her life, and Shelton has done nothing but prove that he’s a wonderful step-father to them, too.
When asked on The Today Show, if Shelton would be a good dad, her immediate response was, “He is a good dad, actually! He’s been helping me out a lot.”
And although there have been some rumors about whether Stefani and Shelton want to bring in a little one of their own, nothing has been confirmed yet.
Regardless of what they decide for their future, it looks like Shelton and Stefani are living their happily-ever-after life together now.
